Shakuntala, the daughter of Meneka and Rishi Vishwamitra, lives in the forest with her teacher, Rishi Kanva. In the forest, she met King Dushyant, fell in love with him and the two married. After giving birth to a child (Prince Bharata), Dushyant left her in the forest with the promise of coming back to pick her up soon. However, due to a sage's curse, Dushyant forgot all about Shakuntala, until fate brought them together again.
